Creating a meaningful creative space
Do you work from home full time? Part time? Maybe you just need a corner where you can play and relax with your creativity every now and then. What ever your situation is, having a meaningful organized space in which to focus is vital.
To me, having a meaningful space means a space that really feels mine and that triggers high and positive associations. It brings emotional well-being. My physical happy place in which I can focus, relax and create for hours and hours and that I am always glad to be in. The kind of space that I miss when I´m away for a few days and that I need to come back to. The place where I connect with my inner essence and creativity.
Here are some tips on how to create this space, if you don´t have it already, and how to keep it that way. As you know, “the universe tends to chaos”, so we need to fight back every now and then and preserve our valued realm.
Create a blank canvas, by walking around the room in which you are intending to allocate your working space and considering if there are walls you can knock down or move, new windows you can insert, more lighting you can install or if the floors can be enhanced in some way.
Then look at your furniture. Do you have everything you need? More importantly, is there anything you could do without? Simplifying your surrounding will help you as a physical and also emotional process. Declutter, now and regularly.
Declutter your mind, by decluttering your space. Examine your art supplies and other possessions related to your practice. Let go of the things that truly no longer serve a purpose and make space for what is most important for you. My golden rule with my personal stuff is “anything that I haven´t used in 1 year gets chucked out”, either by donating, passing it on to friends or family or just throwing away. Remember that clutter also fills up our mind with too much stimuli, reminding the brain there is always something else that has to be done. Which is exhausting. The goal is to turn your working environment in a place where your thoughts and creativity are spontaneous and free.
Storage is the next step once you´ve cleared up space and mind. Explore the potential for storage and get inspiration from the internet and Pinterest and start using shelves, containers, pretty boxes, labels and colors. A well organized space helps you feel in control and clearly focused on what is important for you and your creativity.
4. Flower and scents The positive vibes that plants and fresh flowers bring is clear. They bring yang energy into your creative space. Make sure to replace the flowers when they start fading and lose their vitality. Fragrances and scents are also vital and well known for boosting your sense of well-being. Use them in form of scented candles or essential oils.
5. Inspo at sight. As a creative soul, having inspirational quotes, pictures or drawings at sight will actually come quite easy to you. I like having one inspirational quote on my wall at all times. I also love hanging some of my latest pieces or drafts that I am working on. That keeps me focused, inspired and very often happens that by having them there, close to me, I naturally figure out how to carry on working on them or they just lead to a new idea I want to start working on.
I hope these tips and ideas will help you and inspire you to create a lovely space of your own that you can enjoy and work from for hours and hours.
Much love,
Kristina
